John wiped his chin and staggered back from the lee rail. He had lost what little he had been able to eat long ago, and thought that he must be vomiting seawater by now. He was not alone, for few men could keep from being sick in such seas. Even the toughest old salts were sick when the seas were churned up to this degree, but there was no time to lay about in misery. John took strength from watching his Captain’s constant motion. He was sure that Farr had not slept in days, nor had he taken a meal. Yet his energy was never wavering, and the men and officers were in awe of his fierce determination that his ship would emerge from the storm in one piece. It gave them strength and hope that they would prevail over whatever nature could throw at them, and John felt a surge of pride that carried him along to his next task.
